BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- Indiana hosts the Indiana Relays, Feb. 2-3, at Gladstein Fieldhouse. The Hoosiers compete on the road next weekend in Fayetteville, Ark., the site of the NCAA Indoor Championships.
JUMPIN' JENKINS
Junior Kyle Jenkins won the triple jump at the Indiana Open on Jan. 20 with a leap of 15.86 meters. The distance was his second provisional qualifying mark in the event this year, and is currently the second longest jump in the country in the event. It is also a personal best for Jenkins. He was an All-American in the event in the 2006 outdoor season.
Jenkins was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 9 for his performance at the Indiana Open, when he jumped 15.51 meters in the triple jump.
COOVER SOARS
Sophomore Jeff Coover won the pole vault at the Gladstein Invitational on Jan. 27, clearing 5.20 meters, a provisional qualifying mark. It is Coover's personal best.
SPRINTING TO SUCCESS
Sophomore Wil Glover ran his best time of the season in the 60-meter dash at the Gladstein Invitational on Jan. 28, coming in second in 6.86. Junior Keith Heerdegen was third in the 200-meter dash, recording a career best time of 21.91.
LAWSON GOING LONG
Senior Kiwan Lawson leaped to a distance of 7.49 meters in the Indiana Open on Jan. 6. His mark was three inches off a provisional qualifying time. Lawson qualified for NCAA's in the event last season in indoor competition.
He continued his winning ways at the Indiana Open II on Jan. 13, taking the long jump again and finishing first in the 200-meter dash.
FEAR FEARNOW
Sophomore Paul Fearnow won the weight throw on Jan. 13 at the Indiana Open II, clearing 18 meters for the first time in his career with a toss of 18.29 meters. The throw ranked fourth on the all-time list at Indiana.
SENSATIONAL SMITH
Junior Ryan Smith had a solid day at the Indiana Team Classic on Jan. 20. His time of 1:19.61 in the 600-meters ranks third on the all-time Hoosier list. He finished second in the event.
OVER THE HURDLES
Freshman Chris Sackmann ran a time of 8.28 in the 60-meter hurdles at the Indiana Open II on Jan. 13. His time in the event ranks fifth all-time at Indiana.
FANTASTIC FRESHMEN
Several freshmen are leading the Hoosiers in their respective events. Eric Werskey holds Indiana's top mark this year in the shot put, tossing 17.67 meters at the Indiana Open II on Jan. 13, and is second in the weight throw with a distance of 16.06 meters at the Indiana Open on Jan. 6. Jared Nuxoll has the best mark in the high jump, clearing 2.02 meters at the Indiana Open II.
Freshman Jordan Kyle, who earned All-America honors in cross country in the fall, ran a time of 14:29.66 in the 5,000 meters at the Gladstein Invitational. He finished second in the event.
Redshirt freshman Tyler McCreary leads the team in the mile run, clocking in at 4:10.39 at the Indiana Team Classic.
INDIANA TO HOST BIG TEN MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
The Hoosiers will host the 2007 Big Ten Indoor Men's Championship on Feb. 24-25. Indiana last hosted the championship in 2000. Its last team win was in 1992. The Hoosiers finished fifth last year.
