BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana hosts Marquette and Ball State at the IU Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 4. The match with Marquette begins at 9:30 a.m. while the Hoosiers take on Ball State at 2:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers defeated DePaul, 5-2, and Butler, 7-0, on Saturday, Jan. 27, to move to 6-0 on the year. Against DePaul, Indiana won the doubles point to continue its momentum into singles. Sophomore Sigrid Fischer and senior Cecile Perton earned a 9-8 win at No. 2 to clinch the point.
SCOUTING REPORT
Marquette is 1-3 on the year. In its last time out, Marquette defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 6-1, and fell to Iowa, 4-3. All three matches the Golden Eagles have dropped have come by one point. Marquette is led by Lauren Little and Kylie Moore, who play at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Little and Shannon Brown make up the Golden Eagles' No. 1 doubles team. Marquette takes on Western Michigan on Feb. 2 before facing the Hoosiers.
Ball State is 1-1 on the year, falling to DePaul, 6-1, and defeating Wright State, 6-1. Haly Calderwood is the Cardinals' No. 1 player, while she teams with Sophie Quist at No. 1 doubles.
HOOSIERS RANKED IN ITA POLL
The Indiana Hoosiers are ranked No. 40 in the second Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) FILA Collegiate Rankings of the season, released Jan. 2. Indiana began the year ranked 43rd. Indiana is one of six Big Ten teams ranked in the poll. Northwestern, ranked at No. 8, leads all Big Ten teams in the poll.
BERDALA EARNS INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Sophomore Alba Berdala is ranked No. 86 nationally in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. It is the first time in her career that she has been ranked. Berdala is 6-0 in the dual-match season and 12-5 on the year in singles.
PERFECT SEASON
Senior Cecile Perton remains undefeated on the season with a 6-0 record in both singles and doubles. Perton competes at No. 5 singles for Indiana, while playing with Sigrid Fischer at No. 2 doubles.
LORING ENTERS 30TH SEASON AS HOOSIER COACH
Head coach Lin Loring, who leads the NCAA in women's tennis victories, is in his 30th season at IU. He is one of just six coaches who have coached at Indiana for 30 years or more. The other five are Sam Bell (track, 30 years, 1969-98), Jerry Yeagley (men's soccer, 31 years, 1973-2003), Hobie Billingsley (diving, 31 years, 1959-89), James `Doc' Counsilman (swimming, 33 years, 1957-90), and Bob Fitch (men's golf, 33 years, 1957-89).
