Before heading off to Guadalajara, Mexico, for the GADO North Texas Classic, Indiana men's golf head coach Mike Mayer took time to speak with IUHOOSIERS.com about the tournament. North Texas will host the event at El Palomar Country Club on Sunday-Monday, Feb. 18-19.
What are your thoughts on the field for the tournament?
"We're obviously looking forward to seeing green grass again. We've been stuck inside, except for one day, since the opening day of practice on Jan. 29th. We feel like we can go down to Mexico and win this event. It's going to be tough but I think we are tough enough to overcome our weather issues and compete for the title. We have good memories of last year's event when we played very well with a second place showing. Although the tournament has moved to a different golf course, I think we will be ready to start off the spring with a team title. Houston and Iowa State looks to be our strongest competition but in college golf you can never discount anyone."
What are your thoughts on the play of sophomore Jorge Campillo so far this season and what are your expectations of him in this tournament?
"We need to come together as a team and have everyone contribute. That starts with our number one man in Jorge Campillo. Jorge had a great fall for us and needs to get right back in the mix of things by competing for the individual title in Guadalajara."
What are your thoughts on the play of junior Santiago Quirarte and what are your expectations of him in this tournament? "One of the keys for us in Mexico will be the play of Santiago Quirarte. Santi played well in his home country last year in this event and we need the same effort this time around. He played very well for us in our last outing at the Landfall but overall we were very disappointed in his play in the fall. We challenged him at Landfall and we will challenge him again at the North Texas Classic."
What are your thoughts on the play of sophomores Drew Allenspach and Seth Brandon and what are your expectations of them in this tournament?
"Both Seth Brandon and Drew Allenspach had roller coaster falls for us. We need to see more consistency out of both of them if this team is going to be successful."
What are your thoughts on the play of freshman Alex Martin and what are your expectations of him in this tournament?
"I think Alex Martin is ready for this event. He had a very good tournament after Christmas at the New Year's Invitational and he's swinging the club better than I've ever seen him before. It could be Alex's time to shine."
