BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer program has named seniors Lindsay McCarthy and Katy Stewart as co-captains for the 2007 season. Both McCarthy and Stewart were voted captains by their teammates this off-season.
McCarthy, a 2006 co-captain, saw action in 20 games, while starting 18 this past fall. She finished the season with two goals and was the Hoosiers' nominee for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Over her Indiana career the Galloway, N.J., has been integral to the program's success, as she has netted eight goals and has assisted on five. McCarthy's most noteworthy performance came in 2004, when she recorded her first career hat trick against Oakland (9/30); the only time in IU history a freshman has scored three goals in a game.
Stewart, a Bloomington, Ind., native will wrap up her career in her hometown, having seen action in 51 games over the last three seasons. Known as a valuable substitute off the bench, Stewart played in 19 games in 2006, with two starts, scoring one goal. As co-captain in both her junior and senior seasons at Bloomington South High School, she is no stranger to a leadership role.
Head Coach Mick Lyon and his coaching staff expect great things from their two leaders as the spring season gets underway.
"Lindsay and Katy are both going to do a great job as captains," Lyon said. "They were selected by their teammates and command respect as soccer players, students and most importantly as young college women.
"With eight current freshmen and 14 new players coming this fall, Lindsay and Katy's character qualities are also very important," Lyon said. "The good news is we also have a tremendous senior group and their leadership and counsel will be instrumental for the fall."
The 2007 spring season kicks off when Indiana hosts the IU Women's Soccer Indoor Event on Sunday, Feb. 25 at Mellencamp Pavilion. The Hoosiers will face Kentucky, Indiana State and Dayton, beginning with a contest against the Wildcats at 9:30 a.m. EST followed by the Sycamores at noon and the Flyers at 3:30 p.m.
