GUADALAJARA, Mexico - The Indiana men's golf team finished in a tie for first place with the University of Houston and sophomore Jorge Campillo tied for first for the individual title at the GADO North Texas Classic, held at El Palomar Country Club in Guadalajara, Mexico, and hosted by North Texas, to open the spring portion of the 2006-07 schedule. The Hoosiers turned in a tournament total of 896 (305-287-304) to share the team title. Houston carded rounds of 309-290-297 for its total and moved up from third place after the first round.
Campillo turned in a total of 214 (73-68-73) to tie Jordan Irwin of Houston (76-69-69) for the individual crown. His 68 in the second round tied a career low. Prior to the win, the Caceres, Spain, native had one victory to his credit, the 2006 Boilermaker Invitational. The Hoosiers had picked up the team win there, as well, and were also victorious at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational in the spring of 2006.
"Overall, I thought it was a good tournament," IU head coach Mike Mayer said. "We didn't play as well as we were capable of playing and I'd like to finish better, but it's still very early in the season and we tied for first and can build off of that."
Following Campillo was fellow sophomore Seth Brandon, who tied for 10th place with a 54-hole total of 225 (76-75-74). He was the lone Hoosier to improve his standing in the field during the final round. Junior Santiago Quirarte, a native of Wueretaro, Mexico, finished the tournament in a tie for 17th. He carded a 227 (78-71-78) for his placement. Joining those three in the top-25 was sophomore Drew Allenspach, who shared 23rd place with a three-round total of 230 (78-73-79). Rounding out the IU lineup was freshman Alex Martin, who finished in 44th position after carding a 245 (81-82-82).
Louisiana-Lafayette finished third at the event, just one stroke behind IU and Houston at 897 (308-290-299). Middle Tennesse State was fifth with a 54-hole total of 898 (305-293-300), while Cal State Northridge rounded out the top five at 899 (309-295-295).
The Hoosiers will return to action on Sunday, March 18, when they host the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C., on the famed Pinehurst No. 8. The three-day event will conclude on Tuesday, March 20.
