Hoosiers Host Big Ten Indoor Championship

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the first time since 2000, the Big Ten Indoor Championships return to Bloomington, Sat.-Sun., Feb. 24-25. Indiana's last team win was in 1992. The Hoosiers finished fifth last season. Action begins at 10 am both days.
JUMPIN' JENKINS
Junior Kyle Jenkins won the triple jump at the Indiana Open on Jan. 20 with a leap of 15.86 meters. The leap is currently the seventh longest jump in the country in the event. It is also a personal best for Jenkins. He was an All-American in the event in the 2006 outdoor season.
Jenkins was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 9 and Jan. 23 of this season for his triple jump performances.
At the Indiana Relays on Feb. 3, Jenkins had a leap of 7.12 meters in the long jump, which ranks ninth in the conference.
LAWSON GOING LONG
Senior Kiwan Lawson leaped to a distance of 7.75 meters at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 9, which currently is the fourth best jump in the nation. He has the best mark in the Big Ten by over a foot.
The provisional qualifying mark ties his personal best in the event, and ranks fifth on the all-time list at Indiana. He also qualified for the NCAA Championship in the long jump last season.
Lawson is also strong in the 200-meter dash. He ranks eighth in the Big Ten with a time of 21.71, which he ran on Feb. 16 at Hoosier Hills.
COOVER SOARS
Sophomore Jeff Coover won the pole vault at the Gladstein Invitational on Jan. 27, clearing 5.20 meters, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. It is Coover's personal best. He also cleared the mark at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 9.
SPRINTING TO SUCCESS
Sophomore Wil Glover ran his best time of the season in the 60-meter dash at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 10 with a time of 6.85.
Junior Doug Dayhoff leads the Hoosiers in the 400-meter dash, clocking in a personal best time of 47.46 at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 9. He is fifth in the Big Ten in the event. Dayhoff is second on the time chart in the 200-meters at Indiana, running a 21.87 at Hoosier Hills on Feb. 16.
FEAR FEARNOW
Sophomore Paul Fearnow won the weight throw on Jan. 13 at the Indiana Open II, clearing 18 meters for the first time in his career, with a toss of 18.29 meters. The throw ranks fourth on the all-time list at Indiana.
SENSATIONAL SMITH
Junior Ryan Smith had a solid day at the Indiana Team Classic on Jan. 20. His time of 1:19.61 in the 600-meters ranks third on the all-time Hoosier list. He finished second in the event.
Smith also holds Indiana's top time in the 60-meter hurdles this season, running a time of 8.24 at the Indiana Relays on Feb. 2. His time in the event ranks fifth all-time at Indiana.
FANTASTIC FRESHMEN
Several freshmen are leading the Hoosiers in their respective events. Eric Werskey holds Indiana's top mark this year in the shot put, tossing 17.67 meters at the Indiana Open II on Jan. 13, and is second in the weight throw with a distance of 16.06 meters at the Indiana Open on Jan. 6. Jared Nuxoll has the best mark in the high jump, clearing 2.02 meters at the Indiana Open II.
Freshman Jordan Kyle, who earned All-America honors in cross country in the fall, ran a time of 14:29.66 in the 5,000-meters at the Gladstein Invitational. He finished second in the event. Kyle also holds Indiana's top time in the 3,000-meter run, coming in with a time of 8:14.71 at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 10.
Redshirt freshman Tyler McCreary leads the team in the mile run, clocking in at 4:10.39 at the Indiana Team Classic.
INDIANA RANKED IN TOP 25
The Indiana men's track and field team were listed in the Trackwire 25 Power Rankings on Feb. 6, coming in at No. 19. The poll is determined based on projected NCAA meet points.
MULTISPORT ATHLETES
Three members of the Hoosiers track and field team also play football for Indiana. Marcus Thigpen, Greg Brown and Dan Kinsey participated with coach Terry Hoeppner's squad during the fall.
