Lawson, Jenkins named IU Athletes of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performance in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Feb. 25, track and field athletes senior Kiwan Lawson and junior Kyle Jenkins were named the winners.
Lawson and Jenkins each won an individual title at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Lawson's leap of 7.73-meters in the long jump was over seven inches longer than the next competitor. He also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 21.50.
Jenkins won the triple jump with a leap of 15.66-meters. He also finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 7.32-meters.
Lawson and Jenkins were two of many Hoosier athletes to turn in strong performances on the week, including Armon Bassett (men's basketball), Jorge Campillo (men's golf), Sarah McKay (women's basketball), Dara McLoughlin (men's tennis), Vera Neuenswander (women's track and field), Laura Nochta (women's golf) and Tyler Tufts (baseball).
Men's Basketball
Armon Bassett
G - Fr. - Terre Haute, Ind.
Running the point for the injured Earl Calloway, Armon Bassett logged 31.5 minutes and guided the Hoosiers to a 1-1 record last week. He led the team with 16.5 points per game, including a career-high 25 (of the team's 58 points) at Michigan State. The Terre Haute, Ind., native hit 7-of-12 shots and 7-of-8 free throws to go along with five assists in 34 minutes. In the two games, Bassett shot 61.1 percent, 50 percent from downtown and 87.5 percent from the charity stripe.

Jorge Campillo
So. - Caceres, Spain
Sophomore Jorge Campillo tied for first at the GADO North Texas Classic, the Hoosiers first event of the spring season. Prior to the win, the Caceres, Spain, native had one individual medalist honor to his credit, the 2006 Boilermaker Invitational. The Hoosiers had picked up the team win there, as well, and were also victorious at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational in the spring of 2006. The 68 that Campillo carded in the second round also tied his season low.
Women's Basketball
Sarah McKay
C - Sr. - Victoria, B.C., Canada
McKay netted 20-plus points in both of IU's games last week, scoring 21 points in a win against Northwestern and 22 in a tough loss at Penn State. In her first outing of the week, McKay sank 7-of-13 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line for her 21 points. On Sunday, McKay posted her sixth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Men's Tennis
Dara McLoughlin
Jr. - Dublin, Ireland
McLoughlin went 2-0 in Indiana's 5-2 loss to No. 33 Kentucky. He defeated Will Ward, 6-4, 1-0 (ret.) at No. 2 singles, and beat Bruno Agostinelli and Kenny Hodge at No. 1 doubles with junior Thomas Richter.
Women's Track
Vera Neuenswander
Fr. - Jefferson City, Mo.
Neuenswander broke the Big Ten record in the pole vault with a second-place finish at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. She cleared 4.11-meters in the event, besting the previous Big Ten record of 4.00-meters. She also bested the school record of 3.91 meters. Her clearance ranks just outside the top 10 in the country in the event, and is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Women's Golf
Laura Nochta
Fr. - Cortland, Ohio
Laura Nochta tied for 33rd at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, the Hoosiers first tournament of the spring season. She carded a 74 in the first round and followed that with two 77's on the final two days, all while battling flu-like symptoms.
Baseball
Tyler Tufts
P - So. - Sagamore Hills, Ohio
Tufts registered a complete game in the Hoosiers' 5-1 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday. Tufts allowed just six singles and one walk to register his third career complete game, inducing three double plays in the contest.
