As part of an ongoing online series, IUHOOSIERS.com will take a look back at each week in Indiana athletics history. This week spotlights Feb. 4-11.
Feb. 5, 2005: At the Meyo Classic in South Bend, Ind., Sean Jefferson broke Jim Spivey's 23-year-old school record in the mile with a career-best run of 3:56.44. Stephen Haas also broke a school record, taking Bob Kennedy's 14-year-old mark in the 3,000-meters with a time of 7:51.00. The 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of David Neville, Doug Dayhoff, Rodney Hollis and Andre Grimes, broke the school record in that event with a time of 3:09.59.
Feb. 6, 2004: Men's and women's diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber was selected as Diving's National Coach of the Year for the United States Olympic Committee's Coach Recognition Program. He was also named the 2003 Big Ten Men's and Women's Coach of the Year and the U.S. National Coach of the Year that season.
Feb. 8, 1958: The men's basketball team defeated 12th-ranked Michigan State, 82-79. All-American center Archie Dees scored 21 points in the win, while Jerry Thompson tallied 19. That year, Indiana won seven of its last eight games to move from sixth place to first after a 1-6 record in pre-conference games.
Feb. 6, 1994: The women's tennis team began the 1994 campaign with a 7-2 victory over Western Michigan. Behind Big Ten Player of the Year Jody Yin and All-Big Ten selection Rachel Epstein, Indiana would go on to win its 11th Big Ten Championship.
Feb. 9-10, 2001: The Hoosier water polo team began the season 2-0 with wins over Santa Cruz (13-10) and Villanova (13-4) at the Princeton Invitational. Kristin Stanford led Indiana with 57 goals that season.
Feb. 11, 1989: The men's tennis team earned a 5-4 victory over No. 15 Arkansas, 5-4. The Hoosiers were led by senior Eoin Collins and sophomores Gunnar Salumaa and David McCallum.
