Hoosiers Fall At San Jose State, 14-9

SAN JOSE, Calif.- The No. 20 Indiana University water polo team opened a west coast swing with a loss at No. 9 San Jose State, 14-9, on Saturday, March 10.
The Hoosiers were led in scoring by Melissa Soria, who tallied three goals on the day. Kara Wooley and Brooke Zimmerman each scored twice for Indiana.
San Jose State took a quick 2-0 lead off of two goals from Juliet Moss with in the first period. Indiana would come back to tie the score, 2-2, with Wooley and Soria each finding the back of the cage at the 5:46 and 3:56 minute marks, respectively.
The Spartans would score the next seven goals in the contest to pull ahead, 9-2, with 2:12 left in the second quarter. Two of those scores came to wrap up the first period and the next five opened the second frame. Bridget McKee scored three goals of the run for San Jose State, while Alexis Higlett added two. Soria closed out the second stanza for the Hoosiers, scoring with seven seconds left to have the score stand at 9-3 at the break.
Indiana would rally in the third and fourth quarters. Each team scored three goals in the third period, with Zimmerman scoring for the Hoosiers with 6:17 and 1:14 left in the frame, respectively, while Wooley added a goal with just over two minutes remaining in the third. Higlett, Moss and Tanya Torres each found the back of the net for San Jose State, giving the Spartans a 12-6 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Hoosiers outscored San Jose State 3-2 in the final period. Kristin Zernicke scored at the 4:41 mark, while Soria tallied her third goal of the game with 1:44 left. Wrapping up the scoring for IU, Claire Nicholson tallied the final goal of the game with just under a minute remaining. For the Spartans, Higlett scored San Jose State's final two goals to bring her total to five in the game.
In goal, Katie Carson made eight saves for Indiana, while Jackie Pyrz had three stops for a total of 11 saves. San Jose State had 13 saves.
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, March 11, when they take on No. 7 UC Davis in Davis, Calif., at 5 p.m. EST.
