BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's men's swimming and diving team will send eight swimmers to the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis from March 15-17, the NCAA announced on March 9. Along with Hesen and Walkotten, juniors Alex Brunfeldt, John Kevin Koehler, Todd Patrick and Pat Penoyar, sophomore Steven Murry and freshman Matt Lenton will compete for the Hoosiers at the championship meet.
At least one Hoosier swimmer is seeded in 15 events. Hesen and Patrick are seeded in six events each to pace the Indiana contingent. Walkotten is seeded in five, while Lenton and Penoyar are in four each. Brunfeldt and Koehler are in two apiece.
In addition to Hesen's top billing in the 100 back, Walkotten is the 27th seed in the event.
The Hoosiers placed three in the 100-yard butterfly, with Walkotten earning the 13th seed, Hesen the 16th and Patrick the 23rd.
Koehler and Brunfeldt are both seeded in the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle. Koehler is 28th in the 500 free and 21st in the mile, while Brunfeldt is 33rd in the 500 free and 13th in the 1,650.
Patrick (34th) and Lenton (63rd) both earned spots in the 100-yard freestyle, while Murry (33rd) and Patrick (38th) are both seeded in the 200-yard individual medley.
Hesen is the fifth seed in the 200-yard backstroke, Murry is 14th in the 400-yard individual medley and Lenton is 34th in the 50-yard freestyle. Penoyar is seeded in both breaststroke events, earning the 10th seed in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 11th seed in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Hesen, Penoyar, Walkotten and Patrick are the fourth seed in the 400-yard medley relay, while Hesen, Penoyar, Patrick and Lenton are seeded fourth in the 200-yard medley relay. Lenton, Patrick, Hesen and Walkotten are seeded 16th in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
"We're looking forward to this meet," Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. "Ideally the men can do just as well, if not better, than the women (11th place). We have a lot of point potential going; it's a very experienced group. We're just looking forward to one of our best NCAAs in the last four or five years. We would definitely like to beat our 12th-place finish from last year. Obviously, we want to be top 10 if possible."
