Hoosiers Split On First Day Of Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana University water polo team opened the Wolverine Invitational with a 10-6 victory over Cal Baptist but then fell to Brown, 8-4 in the nightcap, on Saturday, March 17. The Hoosiers are now 7-11 overall on the season.
Against Cal Baptist, IU took a 4-1 advantage in the first quarter, but Cal Baptist came back to outscore the Hoosiers, 3-0 in the second frame to send the game into the break tied at 4-4. Indiana regrouped to tally four goals in the third quarter and each team added two apiece in the fourth to wrap up the game in the Hoosiers'favor, 10-6.
Melissa Soria led the Hoosiers with three goals in the contest. Kristin Zernicke and Brooke Zimmerman each added two while Maggie Hannon, Brittany Estrada and Emily Schmitt tallied one each. Julie Hale and Chelsea Gentry led Cal Baptist with two goals apiece.
In the evening game, the Hoosiers and the Bears each scored once in the first period, but Brown outscored IU, 3-1, in the second frame to take a 4-2 advantage into halftime. A three goal Brown output in the third quarter to Indiana's two tallies in the frame gave the Bears a 7-4 lead, and the Hoosiers did not score in the fourth.
Soria, Estrada, Schmitt and Kara Woolley each scored for the Hoosiers in the loss. Lauren Presant led Brown with three goals while Sarah Glick tallied two.
The Hoosiers will close out the Wolverine Invitational on Sunday, March 18, when they take on Wagner at 11:30 a.m. EST and Loyola Marymount at 3 p.m.
