Throughout the 2006-07 season, members of the Indiana women's golf team will be reporting their tournament travels for IUHOOSIERS.com. Freshman Kellye Belcher chronicled the team's travel to the UNLV Spring Invitational.
Saturday, March 10
Over the past week, the IU women's golf team traveled to Las Vegas. We left early Saturday morning and arrived in Las Vegas around 1 p.m. local time. We decided to get in a little practice before checking in at the hotel. The scenery that surrounded the golf course was beautiful. There were mountains in every direction. I thought it was really neat when I was on the putting green and I heard this yell, "Whaa whoo!!" I looked up to the sky and saw about four skydivers falling from the sky. It was amazing! We headed to the hotel after an hour and a half of practice. After we unloaded the car and put everything in our rooms, Coach (Wallman) took us to the MGM for some food. We ended up eating at the buffet, which had about every food in the world on it. It was delicious! We roamed around MGM and saw the tigers. Sadly, they were tired and so all we were able to do was walk under them as they lay asleep on the clear glass cage above us. On the drive back to the hotel we took a ride down the strip.
Sunday, March 11
We were able to sleep in for a little bit Sunday morning because our practice round wasn't until 11:45 a.m. We had a delicious breakfast at the course and then headed out to practice before the round. We had to play all in one group. That was really fun. On the way to hole 12, you have to walk over this desert area and there was a tumbleweed, and Anita (Gahir) got so excited that she finally saw one. On the way to Las Vegas, she said she wanted to see one and now she was able to. She even named it Tumby the Tumbleweed! Oh, Anita. Laura's (Nochta) parents arrived during the practice round and went out to eat with us at this really nice restaurant, Sonoma Cellar at Sunset Station. It was really fun having them at dinner and the dinner was great. We seem to always eat at these amazing restaurants during tournaments and we always get dessert. Well, that night we were so full after dinner that we had to deny the dessert cart and that was a first! Once we got back to the hotel we had one of our team meetings and it was very inspiring. Coach and Coach B (Brophy) gave us great confidence for this week and one of Coach's wishes was for us to not have any correctables.
Monday, March 12
We had a very early morning on Monday. The first tee time was at 8:15 a.m., so that meant that we had to arrive to the golf course around 6:30 so we could have time to eat breakfast and warm up. In the morning it was a bit cool, but it quickly warmed up by the time we finished warming up. This round was amazing. We shot 285 as a team (three-under-par), and that's one shot behind the school record. We all played really well with three of us under par and threw out a 73! We all have been waiting for this time when we would have to throw out a score that was low and having no correctables! Monday was a really fun round. The weather was perfect, with a slight breeze and no humidity. Everyone got their tan lines back and it was just a great day. Monday night was parents' night. That was when we were able to go hang out with our parents and tour the strip. It was a blast!
Tuesday, March 13
Tuesday was another great day. We set a school record with the lowest 36-hole score. We had outstanding play from Elaine and Laura. It was a little warmer, but that didn't hold us back from scoring low. Again, we threw out a low score and had no correctables. We ate dinner at the Cheesecake Factory that night, and it was amazing.
Wednesday, March 14
Wednesday was the last day of the tournament. Unfortunately, we didn't play as well as we hoped, but we still had fun. After the round we had a meeting and talked about this tournament. We realized that even though we didn't win there were so many positives and school/personal bests that came from this tournament. We realized that the fewer correctables we have the better our scores are going to be. This tournament has brought a lot of confidence to this team and shown us that we can compete with the best.
Thursday, March 15
We ate breakfast at the hotel, quickly packed and headed for the airport where we saw the men's tennis team and headed back to B-town!
