Throughout the spring of 2007, IUHOOSIERS.com will catch up with different members of the women's soccer team as they go through their spring season. The interview for Wednesday, March 21, is with senior midfielder Beverly Markwort.
What was it like to go 13 undefeated during the 2006 season?
"It was a great `in the moment' feeling, but as I reflect on it, I know we didn't finish the season in a manner we were content with."
How has the spring gone so far?
"It's going well. I didn't get to participate in the first tournament because I pulled my quad, but I'm feeling better now and looking forward to our upcoming games. We get to play in St. Louis, my hometown, twice and I am excited for those matches. Practice is going well despite having a small squad and we are working well together."
As a senior, what are you most looking forward to in your last season?
"I am looking forward to making the biggest impact I possibly can. The years have gone by so quickly and I still have so much I want to accomplish."
What can we expect from IUWS in 2007?
"We have a lot of new freshmen coming in so that should create a different kind of chemistry on and off the field. We won't know what is in store at the present time with it still being early in the season, so right now, I am just focusing on sharpening my own skills."
What is your favorite memory from last season?
"I was on the bench when Lauren Lamping scored her goals and it was really cool. They were excellent shots and as far as the team is concerned, Lamping was a huge impact player for us."
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when your alarm goes off for early morning conditioning?
"The first thing that comes to my mind is something that I probably shouldn't say. But really, it's not until the conditioning session is over that I feel the relief. I know I have the rest of the day off to focus on school and other things."
Your parents make it to almost every game, what does this mean to you?
"It means everything to me. I feel spoiled because I know not everyone can have both of their parents at all of their games. It'd be hard for me to make it through the season without their support because while I play for myself, the team and coaches first and foremost, my parents are right up in that mix."
In your opinion, who has improved the most since their first game?
"From my class, I'd have to say Katy Stewart. She has really grown into a leader."
What is the hardest part about being a student-athlete?
"Trying to balance soccer, my social life and academics is tough. I want to excel in academics because I know that there is world beyond soccer. Also, I have other agendas because I am not sane without a little fun and social time. This whole time management thing was difficult to figure out over my first couple of years at Indiana."
