BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- Indiana goes on the road to face a pair of ranked teams in No. 55 Iowa and No. 51 Minnesota. The Hoosiers play the Hawkeyes on Friday, March 23 at 3 p.m., and take on the Golden Gophers Sunday, March 25 at 10 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers faced players from Syracuse in Las Vegas, Nev., for the Las Vegas Invitational, March 11-13. Indiana also participated in an alumni fundraiser on March 14.
THE WEEK AHEAD
Indiana faces a pair of ranked teams this week in No. 55 Iowa and No. 51 Minnesota. The Hawkeyes are led by Jacqueline Lee, who is 4-6 in singles this year at No. 1. Kelcie Klockenga and Hillary Mintz compete at No. 1 doubles for Iowa.
For Minnesota, Ashley Schellhas is 7-4 at No. 1 singles. The Golden Gophers have played numerous doubles combinations this season, but the duo of Schellhas and Tijana Koprivica is 3-0 at No. 1 during the dual-match campaign.
HOOSIERS RANKED IN ITA POLL
The Hoosiers are ranked 38th in the latest ITA FILA Collegiate Rankings of the season, released March 20. Indiana began the year ranked 43rd, and was ranked as high as No. 29 on Feb. 21. Indiana is one of six Big Ten teams ranked in the poll. Northwestern, ranked No. 10, leads all Big Ten teams in the poll.
HOOSIERS UPSET RANKED OPPONENTS
Senior Laura McGaffigan became the latest Hoosier to upset a ranked opponent with a 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 60 Joelle Schwenk at No. 2 singles against Kentucky on Feb. 28.
During the fall season, sophomore Alba Berdala defeated No. 37 Inga Beermann of Virginia Tech, 6-1, 6-3, at the Western Michigan Super Challenge on Nov. 11.
Indiana's biggest win as a team came against No. 21 Kentucky. With the Hoosiers ranked 29th, the team took the doubles point, then won four of the six singles matches to clinch a 5-2 victory. McGaffigan, sophomore Sigrid Fischer, senior Cecile Perton and freshman Lindsey Stuckey all won in singles.
BERDALA EARNS INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
Sophomore Alba Berdala began the year ranked No. 86 nationally in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. It was the first time in her career that she was ranked. Berdala is 9-5 in the dual-match season and 15-10 on the year in singles.
STELLAR SEASON
Senior Cecile Perton started the dual-match season with nine straight singles wins at No. 5. She is currently 12-2 in dual matches and 17-9 on the year. Perton competes with Sigrid Fischer at No. 2 doubles. The duo won its first eight matches of the spring campaign, and is currently 11-3. Fischer and Perton are 16-7 on the season.
8-0 START
For the first time since the 2002 season, Indiana started the year 8-0. The Hoosiers finished 2002 with a 17-10 overall record and a 6-6 Big Ten mark.
