Spring Update: A Look Under Center

Four players will see snaps under center throughout the spring, led by redshirt freshman Kellen Lewis. Lewis had one of the best freshman seasons in Indiana football history, racking up 2,221 yards passing and 19 total touchdowns. He was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, and was named a Freshman All-American by both Sporting News and rivals.com. Lewis became the first Hoosier since Levron Williams in 2001 to win Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors twice in one season. He was also voted the team MVP by his teammates at the end of the season.
Another player who will contribute for significant time will be true freshman Ben Chappell, who redshirted the 2006 season. Chappell played quarterback at Bloomington South under head coach Drew Wood, accounting for 2,359 yards and 27 touchdowns during his senior season to earn Associated Press, Indiana High School Coaches Association and Bloomington Herald-Times first team all-state laurels. His six-touchdown performance against Pike on Sept. 30 tied for the best output in Indiana in 2005 and also set a new school record, while his 399-yard effort against Decatur Central on Oct. 14 was the fourth-best total in the state.
Also expected to see time under center are sophomore Dustin Hass and walk-on freshman Will Suess. Hass did not seen action in his first year, but threw for 1,843 yards and 27 touchdowns as a senior in high school.
