Hoosiers Dominate On Second Day of Road Trip

Against Mercyhurst, the Hoosiers opened the match by scoring two goals in the first quarter and did not allow Mercyhurst to score. The Lakers came back to score twice in the second frame, but IU tallied three goals in that period as well to take a 5-3 lead into halftime. The Hoosiers shutout Mercyhurst, 3-0 and 6-0, in the final two quarters to wrap up the victory.
Brooke Zimmerman and Kristin Zernicke each scored three goals in the victory. Joining them in tallying scores were Kelly Palmberg, Kara Woolley, Maggie Hannon, Claire Nicholson, Nicole Sands, Emily Schmitt, Rachel Edwards and Jaclyn Tameris, who each had one find the back of the cage.
Against Penn State Behrend, the Hoosiers jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and did not look back. After outscoring the Lions 5-0 in the second to go up 13-0 at the break, IU allowed just one goal in the fourth quarter before closing out the victory.
Zimmerman recorded a hat trick for the second time on the day in the victory, while six other Hoosiers tallied two goals each in the win.
To close out the day, Woolley got the scoring started for IU, tallying a goal just 33 seconds into play to give the Hoosiers the early lead. Although Grove City tied it at 1-1, Zernicke scored to close out the first quarter to give Indiana back the advantage. The Hoosiers rattled off five consecutive goals to open the second frame and headed into the halftime break with the 8-2 advantage.
The third period saw IU outscore Grove City, 3-1, on the strength of two goals from Hannon and one by Tameris. The Hoosiers closed out the scoring with three goals in the final quarter. Indiana was led by Edwards, who scored a career-best three goals in the win.
The Hoosiers will continue their road trip with a matchup against Slippery Rock on Sunday, March 25. The game is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. EDT.
