BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Following the Indiana football team's first spring practice in pads, assistant head coach Bill Lynch gave his thoughts on the first week of spring ball.
On the team's first practice in pads:
"I thought it was a good first day in pads. We haven't hit any body since the Purdue game. It was crisp. The ball wasn't on the ground very much. I thought the defensive guys flew around, and we can build off of today. That is the most important thing. Now we have a lot of good practice tape we can go in and look at. We're back in shorts tomorrow before a big week in pads next Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday."
On the team's play:
"One of the things that jumped out at me is our top players are playing well. I think it's important in the spring for your best players to come out with a sense of urgency to get better. The team is going to follow the leaders, and that has happened. The younger guys are enthusiastic and willing and have to learn to play at the level of the older guys. We've received good leadership, and the young guys are trying. They'll get better throughout the spring because there is some talent in that group."
On the team's enthusiasm:
"It's been very good. I think a lot has to do with the continuity of the staff. They (the players) know what to expect, they know what we are looking for, and that certainly has helped."
On position changes:
"Today was the first day of contact and I thought (tight end) Blake (Powers) did a tremendous job. He caught a ball and blocked well. Blake lined up like he's been doing it his whole life, and he's just going to continue to improve. (Justin) Carrington moving to linebacker will help the team in the long run. We've also moved Collin Taylor from wide receiver to safety. I'm anxious to get in and watch the tape and see how well these guys are doing on tape."
