Harris Captures Title At Mountain View Collegiate, Hoosiers Third

TUSCON, Ariz. - Junior Elaine Harris captured her first individual title with a seven-under-par total of 209 (70-69-70) at the Mountain View Collegiate on Sunday, March 25. With her victory on the SaddleBrooke Country Club, Harris becomes the first Hoosier to capture individual medalist honors since Shannon Johnson captured the 2006 UNLV Spring Invitational.
"We are all so pleased, so happy and so proud for Elaine," head coach Clint Wallman said. "This was a long time coming for her. She is a quality person and a quality player, and I believe that this is just a huge stepping stone for her to more success."
As a team, the Hoosiers finished third at the event with a team total of 873 (297-287-298). Following Harris in the lineup was freshman Kellye Belcher, who tied for 19th position at the 54-hole event with a total of 219 (75-72-72). Junior Lauren Harling also turned in a top-25 performance, wrapping up the tournament in a tie for 23rd position with a total of 220 (77-70-73) while freshman Laura Nochta shared 69th after carding a 230 (75-81-74) over three rounds. Rounding out the IU lineup was sophomore Amber Lindgren, who tied for 77th place with a tournament total of 234 (77-76-81).
"I'm really happy with the way we played," Wallman said. "This was a very good field, and they hung in there and played well throughout the tournament. We can definitely take a lot away from this."
Nebraska captured the team title with a total of 866 (287-285-294) and were followed by Northwestern at 870 (294-288-288). Missouri (297-293-284 and Kansas (297-291-286) tied for fourth position with a tournament total of 874, wrapping up the top five.
The Hoosiers will return to action on Monday, April 9, when they host the IU Invitational. For the first time, the tournament will be played at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. The event will begin with 36 holes on Monday and closes out with 18 on Tuesday, April 10.
