BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana football team put their pads on for the second time during this year's spring practice sessions. The weather cooperated for another day of work on the outside football practice fields.
The offense was able to get some valuable work in Tuesday afternoon. The quarterbacks worked with the wide receivers on timing and route running against one-on-one coverage from defensive backs. All the receivers were able to get some routes in while sophomore Kellen Lewis and redshirt freshman Ben Chappell shared quarterback responsibilities.
The offensive line was busy working on its run block schemes while running plays without receivers against the Indiana defense. This was valuable to both sides of the ball as the offensive side worked on their position while the defensive side developed hitting gaps and players were getting to where they needed to be to stop the running back.
Indiana then transitioned into a number of individual stations. The defense worked at coming out of its stance to get to the quarterback. The offensive linemen went one-on-one trying to hold their blocks as long as possible. The skill position players continued to work on timing with their routine 7-on-7 drill.
The special teams also worked on their punt formations on both sides of the ball. Senior Michael Hines and freshman Chris Hagerup punted a few deep while senior cornerback Tracy Porter, sophomore wide receiver Nick Polk and sophomore wide receiver Ray Fischer all returned kicks.
Practice concluded with a full 11-on-11 drill. Lewis and Chappell took most of the snaps from the quarterback position. A majority of the passing plays were short routes to receivers and running backs. The defense had some success getting to the quarterback on a number of occasions. Junior running back Marcus Thigpen led the running corps and showed his speed bursting through a big hole on a couple of occasions. The tight ends also were involved, as senior tight ends Nick Sexton and Blake Powers were busy run blocking and running a few routes.
The Hoosiers return to the practice field Thursday to continue their spring schedule.
