Hoosiers Claim 29 Academic All-Big Ten Certificates

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University Athletics claimed 29 Academic All-Big Ten Conference selections for the winter term. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. A total of 436 student-athletes competing in seven winter sports were honored by the conference for their accomplishments. Indiana participates in five of those sports.
"We have very high standards for our student athletes, both academically and athletically," IU President Adam W. Herbert said. "I congratulate those All-Big Ten honorees competing in winter sports for their strong time management skills, their commitment to academic excellence and dedication to IU Athletics. These student-athletes are developing the competitive edge to become lifelong leaders in their chosen pursuits. They exemplify the best values and traditions of this great university."
"We are incredibly proud of what our student-athletes have accomplished in the classroom," Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan said. "We place a great deal of emphasis on both academic success and competitive excellence at Indiana University and our students continue to raise the bar in both areas."
Swimming and diving led the way with 22 honorees, 12 on the women's side and 10 for the men, followed by wrestling with three accolades. Additionally, the men's and women's basketball teams each garnered two honorees.
"Indiana University has a proud tradition of academic and athletics success, and we are very pleased to recognize our winter-sport student-athletes who have mastered the balance between academics and athletics," Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Grace Calhoun said. These young men and women are wonderful ambassadors for Indiana University. We applaud their accomplishments."
