Estrada Named IU Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's water polo player Brittany Estrada has been named the IU Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 8. The award is selected weekly by the IUHOOSIERS.com staff.
Estrada tied her career high with three goals, including the winning tally with 1:42 remaining in the first overtime session as the Indiana University water polo team defeated rival Michigan, the No. 17 team in the country, 9-7, in overtime on Saturday, April 7 in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. She picked up her first goal of the game just one minute into the second frame and then tied the score at 4-4 with 50 seconds remaining in that period on her second tally.
The Hoosiers received the No. 1 seed at the CWPA Western Division Championships with the win over Michigan.
Other Indiana athletes who had standout weeks include Laura McGaffigan (women's tennis), Thomas Richter (men's tennis) and Seth Brandon (men's golf).
Laura McGaffigan
Sr. - Davenport, Iowa - Bettendorf
McGaffigan had a strong week against several nationally ranked teams. She
teamed with Alba Berdala to earn a tough singles win against Ohio State, and then won in singles in a third-set tiebreaker. Although she fell against No. 2 Notre Dame, her and Berdala played strong against 8th-ranked Catrina Thompson and Christian Thompson in doubles, going three sets with Christian Thompson at No. 2 singles. Against 11th-ranked Northwestern, McGaffigan and Berdala upset 13th-ranked Georgia Rose and Alexis Prousis in doubles, 8-4, and went three sets with 29th-ranked Sam Murray, 7-5, 6-4, 1-0 (9).
Thomas Richter
Jr. - Hildesheim, Germany - Gymnasium Josephinum
Richter went 4-0 in singles and doubles during the week. He won at No. 2
singles against Wisconsin, defeating Nolan Polley, 7-6, 6-2, and teamed up
with Dara McLoughlin to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. In Indiana's 4-3 upset of Northwestern, he and McLoughlin won at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, while Richter
beat Willy Lock at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
Seth Brandon
So. - Dalton, Ga. - The Baylor School
Brandon tied for fourth at the Boilermaker Invitational over the weekend, wrapping up the event with a total of 148 (74-74). The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to freezing temperatures in West Lafayette, Ind. With his placement, Brandon turned in his best finish of the season. His previous season-best was a tie for 10th at the GADO North Texas Classic to open the spring portion of the schedule.
