COLUMBUS, Ohio - Battling adverse weather conditions, the Indiana men's golf team finished in 10th position at the 37th Kepler Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio State University on the OSU Scarlet Course. The Hoosiers turned in a team total of 625 (313-312) for their placement in the weather-shortened event.
"We really didn't handle the weather well," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "It gets to the players, even after a week off, and we didn't handle it very well. It's not as much about golf with this, it's more about the weather. We had a chance to gain ground today, and we did a little bit, but not enough. We'll get ready for next week and hopefully have a 54-hole tournament at Michigan State."
Leading the way for IU was sophomore Drew Allenspach, who wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 14th after carding a 152 (75-77) for the event. One stroke behind him at 153 (76-77) was fellow sophomore Jorge Campillo, while classmate Seth Brandon shared 53rd after carding rounds of 83 and 78 for a total of 161. Freshman Alex Martin tied for 61st at the event with a two-round total of 162 (82-80) and junior Santiago Quirarte rounded out the Hoosier lineup with a total of 165 (80-85) to tie for 75th position.
Louisville took home the tournament title with a total of 591 (292-299), the only team to record two rounds below 300 in the event. Michigan State followed them in second with a total of 600 (295-305), while Penn State was third at 606 (296-310). Rounding out the top-five, South Carolina (294-313) and Northwestern (295-312) shared fourth place with totals of 607. Matt Harmond of Michigan State captured tournament medalist honors with an even-par total of 142 (71-71).
The Hoosiers will be in action next on Saturday, April 21, when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the Fossum/Spartan Invitational. The event will conclude on Sunday, April 22.
