BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team hosted its second set of home games this spring season on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Miami University and a 1-1 draw with Evansville. The Hoosiers improved to 4-1-3 on the spring campaign after the pair of contests.
Indiana opened the day with a 2-0 victory over Miami with sophomore Liz Holby netting both of the Hoosier goals. The first of Holby's goals came in the 15th minute of the first half, when on a break, the forward was able to beat Miami's defense and chip the ball in over the Miami keeper's head to make the score 1-0.
With one already grazing the back of the net, Holby worked her magic again just three minutes later, as she finished a through ball from Lindsay McCarthy. After taking the pass, Holby beat defender Stephanie Laser and unleashed a shot sharply between the posts. Neither team scored in the second half as the Hoosier defense was anchored by senior Katy Stewart, who helped to preserve the shutout.
In the second match of the day, the Hoosiers notched a 1-1 tie with Evansville. The Purple Aces got on the board first when sophomore Julie Winkler found a hole in the defense and deposited the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Senior Suzie Teixeira answered back, though, getting the Hoosiers on the board with a long pass into the box that bounced in front of the keeper and tucked itself just under the crossbar to knot the score at 1-1. The Hoosiers nearly took the game in the closing minutes, when Holby got past the defense with under five to play, but the sophomore was unable to find the back of the net.
IU will conclude its spring season next weekend in St. Louis where the team will meet Memphis and Saint Louis. Game time against Memphis is slated for 9 a.m. EDT, while the Hoosiers and Billikens will kick off at 11:30.
