Indiana Closes Out Regular Season with Penn State, Michigan

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana closes out its regular season at home against Penn State and Michigan. The Hoosiers take on the Nittany Lions on Saturday, April 21, at 10 a.m., and face the Wolverines on Sunday, April 22, at 10 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana raised its record to 7-1 in the Big Ten with a weekend sweep of Illinois and No. 45 Purdue. The Hoosiers defeated Illinois, 5-2, before coming from behind to defeat Purdue, 4-3. Laura McGaffigan and Alba Berdala clinched the doubles point with a win over No. 45 Brooke Beier and Mallory Voelker, 8-6, coming back from a 6-2 deficit. In singles, Indiana went down 3-1 before Berdala (No. 1), McGaffigan (No. 2) and Stuckey (No. 6) all won in singles to clinch the win.
THE WEEKEND AHEAD
Penn State is 9-10 on the season and 3-5 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions are coming off a 5-2 win over Michigan State. Andreea Niculescu and Sasha Abraham are the top singles players, while the team has played six different duos at No. 1 doubles this year.
Michigan (13-5, 7-1 Big Ten) is ranked 25th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Like Indiana, its only loss in Big Ten competition so far this season is to Northwestern. Jenny Kuehn and Chisako Sugiyama, ranked 91st and 95th, respectively, have each played at No. 1 singles this year and team up at No. 1 doubles.
HOOSIERS RANKED IN ITA POLL
The Hoosiers are ranked 27th in the latest ITA FILA Collegiate Rankings of the season, released April 17. It is their highest ranking of the season. Indiana began the year ranked 43rd. Indiana is one of seven Big Ten teams ranked in the poll. Northwestern, ranked No. 7, leads all Big Ten teams in the poll.
MCGAFFIGAN AND BERDALA UPSET RANKED OPPONENTS, EARN RANKING
Senior Laura McGaffigan and sophomore Alba Berdala scored the biggest upset victory of the year when they defeated No. 13 Georgia Rose and Alexis Prousis, handing the Northwestern duo its first loss in Big Ten play this season. Two matches later, McGaffigan and Berdala upset 45th-ranked Brooke Beier and Mallory Voelker of Purdue, 8-6. They earned a ranking of 55th in the latest ITA doubles poll, released April 17.
20 WIN SEASONS
Four IU student-athletes have reached 20 wins this season. Laura McGaffigan became the latest Hoosier to reach 20 wins, on April 14. Sophomore Sigrid Fischer got her 20th win against Northwestern on April 8. Senior Cecile Perton reached the mark against Ohio State on April 4, while freshman Lindsey Stuckey earned her 20th victory on March 25 against Minnesota.
