NORMAN, Okla. - Indiana University sophomore Jorge Campillo was one of eight golfers selected to represent Europe in the 2007 Palmer Cup presented by Monster. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition between American collegiate golfers and their counterparts from Europe will be played on June 7-8, at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
Campillo will be joined on the team by Jonas Blixt of Florida State (Sweden), Rhys Davies (Wales) and Gareth Shaw (Northern Ireland), who play for East Tennessee State, Texas Tech's Oscar Floren (Sweden), Georgia State's Mark Haastrup (Denmark), Arizona's Pedro Oriol (Spain) and Stirling's Gordon Yates (Scotland). The group will be coached by Chris van der Velde of the Netherlands. The United States leads the all-time series 5-4-1, but Europe has captured three of the last four titles.
A native of Caceres, Spain, Campillo was the unanimous Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2006 as well as being named first team All-Big Ten that season. He opened the spring of 2007 by earning medalist honors in his first two starts, tying for the win at the GADO North Texas Classic and outpacing the field at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate three weeks later. In addition, Campillo carded six top-10 finishes during the fall campaign, with two thirds and two fifths.
He is the second Palmer Cup participant to come from the Indiana lineup, as former Hoosier and current PGA Tour player Jeff Overton represented the United States at the 2005 competition. Campillo, a member of the Spanish National Federation team, has been selected to the Spanish National Team 17 times. Most recently, he represented his country at the European Under-21 Team Championships in the summer of 2006. Campillo captured all of his matches throughout the championships to lead the Spanish National Team to victory.
"It's quite an honor for Jorge, and a well-deserved one," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said of Campillo's selection. "He's been an outstanding collegiate player and obviously a great Big Ten player, but this is a national award. At such an early age, as just a sophomore, it's really pretty incredible. It's going to be an odd feeling though, going to this event and rooting for the European team, at least for a few matches. I was lucky enough to be at the Palmer Cup two years ago with Jeff Overton, and it's an unbelievable event, with pomp and circumstance. We are obviously very proud of this accomplishment and are excited for Jorge."
Davies, Floren and Haastrup helped lead Europe to its record-breaking 19.5-4.5 victory last summer at Prestwick Golf Club. Davies will be competing in his fourth Palmer Cup - just the fourth player to do so - while Floren and Haastrup will be participating in their second. Blixt, Shaw, Oriol and Yates will be competing in their first Palmer Cup as well as Campillo.
