BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's golf head coach Clint Wallman sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com to discuss the lineup and his thoughts on the tournament as the Hoosiers prepare for the Lady Buckeye Invitational on April 21-22, in Columbus, Ohio.
On the lineup: "Personnel wise, Kendal (Hake) is in for Kellye (Belcher) this week. I think it's a great opportunity for her and I think she will do a wonderful job. She's been playing really well and she's been hitting the ball very well, so I expect good things from her."
On how the team will rebound after hosting the IU Invitational last week: "I think its a big relief once you get done hosting a tournament, because there are a lot of extra responsibilities administering the event. I think they are very prepared, very focused on what they need to do, and are generally looking forward to going to Ohio State and having a good event."
On the field: "Obviously, there are not going to be any surprises, because we have seen every team in this field. I think that will put us at ease and make us a little more comfortable so that we can go out and take care of our business. This week is a welcome departure from last week, because having your event off campus, there are a lot of extra little things to worry about. This week we can just be in our regular tournament travel routine and I think that will be a big key for us."
On what the team has been working on: "The men's team went to Ohio State last week, so I had an opportunity to meet with Coach Mayer and talk about the Ohio State course and what he saw, which helped us prepare a little bit for this week. Mainly, with the redesign, the greens there have a lot more swales and higher faced bunkers, which fit in very nicely with what we needed to work on after Crooked Stick. Our putting and our short game have been excellent all spring. It wasn't as good at Crooked Stick, and it showed up in our scores, so we tried to blend the two things together. Lots of long putts over swales, focusing a lot on distance control, things like that."
On this being the last tune-up before the Big Ten Championship: "This year, we've been working very hard to put ourselves in a position to advance past the regular season. With that being said, our best way to do that is to be prepared for the Ohio State golf course and treat next week (The Big Ten Championship) like its own tournament. We will have a little bit of turnaround time in between the two in case we need to tweak a few things here or there. The spring has been about getting ourselves prepared and ready to go for these last two events. I'm glad we're playing at Ohio State, because there are some similarities to the course that we are going to be playing at Michigan State the following weekend."
