BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana volleyball head coach Sherry Dunbar sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com to recap the teams play in Indianapolis on April 14 and to also preview the University Gym Tournament on April 21.
General thoughts on the day in Indianapolis: "We played four matches and went 3-1. We beat Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati and the University of Indianapolis. We lost to Western Kentucky. It is good to get the wins. I think Western Kentucky was a real struggle for us. It was our last match of the day, and they are a very good defensive team. We said it before, in the spring, defense is something that we are struggling with right now. So to play a really good defensive team and we're a really good offensive team was hard because they were digging all our best shots. They were doing a great job against us, and I think we got a little frustrated. We played well in the beginning and then they ran off about seven points in a row, and we just couldn't get back into it. I would have liked to play them at the beginning of the day, but it was nice to see what we had left at the end of the day."
On what the team has been working on in practice as a result: "The good thing is we are still focused on defense in practice and we are going to get a chance to play Western Kentucky again this Saturday. Hopefully we'll see our team rise up a little bit defensively and challenge them, which is what we are trying to do in practice."
On who made an impact in Indianapolis: "I thought Lauren (Ditteon) had a very good day. She has been showing some very good results in practice, especially defensively. Her shoulder has gotten better this spring, so she is able to swing at more balls. We have limited offense at practice, so she hasn't had to swing at a ton, but when she is swinging she is swinging for kills. More impressive is what I've noticed on defense and her leadership on the court, just being more vocal. I think that was a really good, pleasant surprise for us all day on Saturday to watch some of the things that she has been progressing with."
On playing at home to close out the spring on April 21: "It is the last tournament of the spring season. I think our goal is to put together what we have been doing this spring, but to also end on a really positive note. We are playing at home for the first time this spring, and it would be good to have a positive note going into the summer. They train very hard over the summer here and playing on their own, and I think for them to end on a good day would be a really positive way to start the summer for the continued preparation for the fall. I think it will be fun day. Their parents will be here, we have some alumni coming in and we have our banquet on Saturday night. It should just be a really exciting weekend, and I'm glad we are here for all of that. This will the first chance for a lot of those people to see our play this spring."
