BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana men's golf head coach Mike Mayer sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com to discuss the lineup and his thoughts on the tournament as the Hoosiers prepare to defend their title at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational on April 21-22, in East Lansing, Mich.
On the tournament: "We've won two of the last three years there. Going in as the defending champion is difficult sometimes, but at the same time, hopefully it gives us confidence and the knowledge that we can win. It's a golf course that I really think suits us. It's a golf course where length is a big advantage, but you can't really overpower it. The greens I know will be slick and undulated, so if we can show some patience on the putting surfaces, then that will be a key to us defending our title. We are looking forward to it."
On sophomore Jorge Campillo: "To say that Jorge has had a couple of off weeks is not a fair thing to say, but his standards are a little higher than normal. The past two weekends, we faced some unbelievable weather situations, and it's been tough for everybody, including Jorge. We look for Jorge to bounce back and compete again for an individual title this weekend."
On sophomore Seth Brandon: "After having three very strong outings to start the spring, it was just one of those weekends (at Ohio State) for Seth. He wasn't very comfortable on the golf course, but you'll see a new Seth Brandon this weekend, there is no question in my mind."
On sophomore Drew Allenspach: "Drew Allenspach is a kid who is ready for a breakout tournament. He's had two very strong outings, and he handled himself very well and the conditions very well at Ohio State. We've really focused on the short game with Drew this week in practice, and he could have a breakout tournament. He has really positioned himself to do that."
On junior Santiago Quirarte: "We need the return of Santiago Quirarte, there is no question about that. His collegiate resume is impressive, he's been a great player for us here at Indiana, but he's sort of been absent from the lineup for us this spring. We need him to contribute. He played well at this event last year and if we can get Santiago back in the flow of things, we'll be hard to beat."
On freshman Alex Martin: "Alex is really, really close. He was close to having a good tournament at Purdue, he had himself in position there. At Ohio State, he had a few big numbers that kept him from contributing more, but his scores have counted each of the last three tournaments and he is close to breaking through. It's been a little bit of a struggle for him, but hopefully he finds the way at Michigan State."
