Fesenko Shines at FINA World Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana student coach Sergiy Fesenko had a stellar showing at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, reaching the championship finals in two events at the meet, which lasted from March 17-April 1.
Fesenko, a native of Kiev, Ukraine, turned in his best showing in the 800-meter freestyle on March 28. Fesenko finished seventh in the heats of the event with a national-record time of 7:52.64 on March 27, then moved up to sixth in the next day's finals with a time of 7:53.43.
On March 25, the opening day of the swimming portion of the World Championships, Fesenko competed in the 400-meter freestyle, touching in 3:48.50 for seventh in the heats. Fesenko dropped a hundredth of a second off his time in the evening's finals session, finishing eighth overall.
Fesenko, who earned five All-America certificates in his two-year Hoosier career, capped his World Championships appearance with a 13th-place finish in the 1,500-meter freestyle on March 31 with a time of 15:08.05.
Fesenko, who competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics for the Ukraine, turned in personal-best finishes in each of his three events at the World Championships. He reached finals at the meet for the first time in his career.
