INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Indiana men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Cincinnati on Friday, April 20, at the Literacy Classic at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis.
"We played a team tonight that fought hard, and in a lot of ways I am glad we played a team that was physical so that we can learn to adapt," head coach Mike Freitag said. "The field kind of took us out of our element a little bit; we like to play on the ground. We did some good things at times. It's a spring game and the result doesn't mean as much, but it's always a game we can learn from. That's why we have the spring."
Indiana made several advances in the first 10 minutes of the game. Lee Hagedorn headed John Mellencamp's free kick over the net, while Eric Alexander's header shot off a cross from Billy Weaver resulted in a save.
Indiana got on the board in the 44th minute. With the Hoosiers moving the ball around in front of the net, Kevin Noschang sent a pass back to Brad Ring, who fired from 15 yards out for the score.
Cincinnati scored the equalizer in the 76th minute. Paul Hoste created an opening to the left of the goal from five yards out and shot into the upper right corner.
As the clock wound down, the Hoosiers pressed toward the goal, but to no avail. Daniel Kelly headed a corner kick high with five minutes remaining. Kelly sent a solid cross to Noschang two minutes later that Bearcat goalkeeper John-Michael Boggs intercepted.
Cincinnati also had its chances to net the game-winner. Indiana keeper Chay Cain, who had three saves on the night, stopped Noah Davidson's shot at point-blank range with just over a minute left.
Before the game, Freitag shared the book "Bad, Bad Bunny Trouble" with the crowd and discussed the importance of reading.
The Hoosiers conclude their spring season at home on Sunday, April 29, against the U-20 Mexican National Team. First kick is at 3 p.m.
