EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman Alex Martin wrapped up the first day at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational with a career-low, one-under-par total of 143 (72-71) as the Indiana men's golf team stands in 11th place with a team total of 584 (298-286).
"We got off to bad start in the morning round and never were able to recover from early mistakes," head coach Mike Mayer said. "I'm proud of way we came back in the second round and played a good, solid round of golf. However, the damage was done early and we put ourselves in too big of a hole with this field. All we can do is come back tomorrow and do our best, and hopefully some good things will happen."
Following Martin is sophomore Seth Brandon, who rebounded from a first-round 76 to fire a one-under 71 in the second round of the day to stand in a tie for 37th with a total of 147. Sophomore Drew Allenspach is tied for 41st after the first two rounds after carding a 148 (74-74). One stroke behind him are sophomore Jorge Campillo (78-71) and junior Santiago Quirarte (76-73), who are tied for 47th place with totals of 149 heading into the final round.
Host Michigan State leads the event with a 13-under-par total of 563 (279-284). Following the Spartans is Xavier at 568 (282-286), while Charlotte stands in third with a total of 570 (286-284). Eastern Michigan (283-290) and Illinois (281-292) are tied for fourth with totals of 573, wrapping up the top-five. Individually, Cam Burke of Eastern Michigan stands atop the leaderboard with a nine-under-par total of 135 (64-71).
The final round of the Fossum/Spartan Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. EDT on Sunday, April 22.
