EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana men's golf team finished in seventh place at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational on Sunday, April 22. The Hoosiers finished the tournament with a team total of 872 (298-286-288) for the tournament.
"I really felt that in our last two rounds we played solid golf," head coach Mike Mayer said. "Not great golf, but solid golf. However, we put ourselves in way to big of a hole with the first round, especially in this quality of a field. I'm proud of the way the team came back. They easily could have just folded after the first round, given up and finished last, but they didn't and that will give them some momentum heading into the Big Ten Championship. They fought and did the best that they could do in the final two rounds."
Leading the way for the Hoosiers was freshman Alex Martin, who tied for 21st with a total of 217 (72-71-74). He was followed by sophomores Drew Allenspach (74-74-71) and Seth Brandon (76-71-72), who tied for 28th with totals of 219 for the 54-hole event. Fellow sophomore Jorge Campillo shared 33rd place after carding a 220 (78-71-71) for the tournament, and junior Santiago Quirarte rounded out the IU lineup by finishing in a tie for 43rd position at 223 (76-73-74).
Host Michigan State took home the team title with a total of 841 (279-284-278). Charlotte was second at 855 (286-284-285), while Xavier wrapped up the event in third with a total of 858 (282-286-290). Wisconsin finished in fourth place at 860 (286-288-286) and Eastern Michigan rounded out the top-five with a team total of 863 (283-290-290). Matt Harmon (73-66-67) and Jack Newman (67-72-67) of Michigan State and Jason Kokrak (69-68-69) of Xavier shared medalist honors with 10-under-par totals of 206.
The Hoosiers will be in action next on Friday, April 27, when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the Big Ten Championship. The 72-hole event will conclude on Sunday, April 29.
