Soria Named IU Athlete Of The Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana water polo player Melissa Soria has been named the IU Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 22. The award is selected weekly by the IUHOOSIERS.com staff.
Soria scored eight goals for the Hoosiers at the Colleigaite Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division Championship on April 21-22. In IU's opening round game against Penn State-Behrend, Soria scored four times as the Hoosier offense set a new program record for goals in a game with 23. She added three tallies in the semifinal win over Gannon and added one goal in the 8-6 overtime loss to No. 19 Michigan in the championship game.
Other Indiana athletes who had standout weeks include Stacey Clausing (women's track and field), Eric Werskey (men's track and field), Tory Yamaguchi (softball), Chris Hervey (baseball), Thomas Richter (men's tennis) and Brianna Williams (women's tennis).
Stacey Clausing
Sr. - St. Mary's, Ohio - St. Mary's Memorial
Notes: Senior Stacey Clausing was one of three Hoosiers to record a regional qualifying mark on Saturday, April 21, at the Cardinal Invitational in Louisville, Ky. Clausing clocked a time of 54.42 to win the 400-meter dash and qualify for the NCAA Mideast Regional meet on May 25-26. She also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.02.
Eric Werskey
Fr. - Seymour, Ind. - Seymour
Notes: Freshman Eric Werskey topped his season-opening mark of 16.85 meters in the shot put with a toss of 17.48 meters for second place in the same event at the Cardinal Invitational on April 21, in Louisville. His mark reached the regional standard for a second time and was a new personal best.
Tory Yamaguchi
Jr. - C - Woodland Hills, Calif. - Chaminade
Yamaguchi hit .500 in five games last week, going 5-for-10 with a home run
and a double. Yamaguchi hit her career-best 12th home run of the season on
Wednesday, April 18, against Evansville, a two-run shot that lifted IU to a
2-0 win. Against Michigan State on Saturday, April 21, she was 2-for-3 with
a double that missed leaving the park by mere inches. She capped her week
with hits in each contest against No. 9/8 Michigan in a doubleheader on
Sunday, April 22. For the week, she slugged .900 and had an on-base
percentage of .583.
Chris Hervey
So. - OF - St. James, N.Y. - Smithtown
Hervey hit .474 for the week to raise his season average to an even .300.
The sophomore had hits in each of Indiana's five games, posting one double,
three RBIs and three runs for the week. Hervey had multiple hits in the
final three games of Indiana's four-game series against Ohio State,
including a 3-for-4 performance in the series finale.
Thomas Richter
Jr. - Hildesheim, Germany - Gymnasium Josephinum
Richter scored upset wins at both No. 1 singles and doubles against Penn State. Teaming with Dara McLoughlin at No. 1 doubles, the duo defeated No. 51 Ryan Berger and Michael James, 8-6. In singles, Richter downed No. 92 Michael James, 6-4, 7-5. He also played a solid match against No. 45 Brian Hung of Michigan, 6-4, 7-5.
Brianna Williams
Jr. - Tampa, Fla. - Gaither
Williams went 4-0 in singles in doubles, as No. 27 Indiana defeated Penn State and No. 25 Michigan. Williams, playing at No. 4 singles, defeated Lauren Holzberg of Penn State, 6-3, 6-2. In doubles, she teamed with Erin Clark at No. 3 to defeat Andreea Niculescu and Dorthy Dohanics, 8-0. Against Michigan, she earned a win over Tania Mahtani, 6-4, 6-1, while helping Indiana win the doubles point with Clark, downing Alli Shafner and Lindsey Howard, 8-5. The win over Michigan clinched second-place in the Big Ten for Indiana.
