PRINCETON, N.J. - A quartet of Indiana water polo players were recognized as Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) All-Western Division selections at the conference championship banquet on April 27. Senior Melissa Soria and junior Brooke Zimmerman garnered first team honors, while senior Kristin Zernicke and freshman Katie Carson notched second team accolades. The four all-conference selections equaled the school record for the third straight season.
Soria and Zimmerman each earned their second consecutive all-conference honor, as Soria was a second team honoree in 2006 and Zimmerman had a place on the first team. In just their second seasons as Hoosiers, both are some of the premier scoring threats in the conference. Soria, who has scored 57 goals this season in 22 games, has accumulated 124 scores for her career at IU, good for sixth all-time in program history. She trails Zimmerman by one goal, as the junior has tallied 125 in her two seasons in Bloomington. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada native also leads the team this season with 69 goals.
Zernicke, who earned her first all-conference honor, stands on top of the IU record book for assists with a total of 136 for her career. This season, the senior has tallied 19 goals and 42 helpers as well as 45 steals. It was also the first all-conference honor for Carson, who leads the team with 135 stops in goal in 20 games. She averages 6.8 saves per game and has a 5.78 goals against average. Against Michigan on April 7, Carson had a career-best 13 saves while facing 27 shots in the Hoosiers 9-7 overtime victory.
The Hoosiers will open the CWPA Eastern Championships on Saturday, April 28, when they take on Brown at 10:30 a.m. The Hoosiers are the No. 5 seed at the championship.
