PRINCETON, N.J. - The Indiana water polo team fell to No. 1 seed Hartwick, 15-7, in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship semifinals on Saturday, April 28. The Hoosiers, the No. 5 seed, had defeated Brown, 9-8, earlier in the day to advance.
The Hoosiers got the scoring started just 39 seconds into play, as senior Melissa Soria took a pass from senior Emily Schmitt to put Indiana on the board, 1-0. Hartwick knotted the score at 1-1 with 4:54 left in the frame, and the Hawks scored twice more before senior Kristin Zernicke took a long outlet pass from junior Brooke Zimmerman and scored to cut the Hartwick advantage to one, 3-2, with 2:37 remaining. Hartwick scored twice in the next minute to go up by three, and Schmitt cut that advantage to two, 5-3, with 41 ticks left on the clock in the first.
The Hawks scored 27 seconds into the second period on a penalty shot by Kirsten Hudson to increase the lead, but the Hoosiers answered back with 7:19 left on a penalty shot of their own, as Zimmerman found the back of the cage. Junior Brittany Estrada picked up a tally of her own with 3:33 left until the break, but Hartwick scored three more times to take a 9-5 lead into halftime.
The Hawks' lead increased in the third frame as Hartwick scored four goals and the Hoosiers could not answer. Sophomore Maggie Hannon scored for IU on the power play 1:29 into the fourth frame of a pass from Schmitt and Zernicke picked up her second goal of the game with 1:24 left to play, but it was not enough, as Hartwick closed out the win, 15-7.
Zernicke led the Hoosiers with two goals while Soria, Schmitt, Zimmerman, Estrada and Hannon each had one score. Schmitt also had two assists in the loss. In the cage, junior Jackie Pyrz had six saves.
The Hoosiers will wrap up the Eastern Championships on Sunday, April 29, when they face off against either No. 2 Michigan or No. 3 Princeton in the game to determine third place. Game time is set for noon EDT.
