EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman Anita Gahir is tied for eighth after the first 54 holes of the Big Ten Championship as the Indiana women's golf team stands in fifth place after the first three rounds. The Hoosiers have a team total of 930 (311-315-304) entering Sunday's final round.
"We definitely played better today," head coach Clint Wallman said. "Given the tough conditions of the course, it was a pretty solid round. Elaine (Harris) played with a lot of confidence and poise today and threw up a good number. I feel pretty good about tomorrow. We are pretty banged up, health wise, right now, but our sprits are high. With what we did today, that gives us a lot of confidence that we can go out and do it again tomorrow."
Gahir carded a 79 on Saturday for a three-round total of 230 (75-76-79). She is followed by juniors Elaine Harris (81-81-72) and Lauren Harling (77-81-76), who are tied for 16th place with totals of 234. Freshmen Kellye Belcher (84-78-77) and Laura Nochta (78-80-81) are tied for 31st place after the first 54 holes, while sophomore Amber Lindgren rounds out the IU lineup in 52nd position with a total of 246 (82-82-82).
Hosts Michigan State are leading the tournament with a total of 890 (300-300-290). Purdue is second at 913 (309-308-296), Northwestern is third with a total of 921 (313-307-301), while Ohio State stands in fourth entering the final round with a total of 924 (313-309-302). Rachel Meikle of Michigan State stands on top of the leaderboard with a three-under-par total of 213 (71-69-73).
The final round of the Big Ten Championship will begin at 9 a.m. EDT on Sunday, April 29.
