BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana earned its first victory of the spring season with a 1-0 win over Louisville on Friday, April 6, at Yeagley Field.
Darren Yeagle scored the game-winner in the 80th minute of play. Eric Alexander took a shot from 15 yards out that hit the post and Yeagle shot the rebound past goalkeeper Trae Manny for the score.
"This was a tough game," head coach Mike Freitag said. "This was part of a weekend where we host our coaches' symposium, so the guys were on their feet this morning for some training sessions. I thought we were not as sharp as we have been and some of that could be attributed to that. But it's good to find a way to win. I thought Louisville played well tonight and worked hard. All in all, it's the spring season and you're going to make mistakes. We've got a lot of young players out there. We have some new faces and people playing new positions. It's going to take awhile. We've just got to be patient."
Indiana outshot Louisville 15-11 in the game. Alexander led the Hoosiers with five shots. Steve Sloan and Gerard Voutier each had three for the Cardinals.
The Hoosiers had a number of chances to score in the game. In the 32nd minute, Yeagle sent a cross to Neil Wilmarth directly in front of the goal. Wilmarth's shot was saved by Manny. Yeagle nearly scored in the 58th minute, darting between defenders to get a shot off, but it sailed wide.
With 15 minutes remaining, Indiana picked up its intensity. In the 76th minute, Yeagle sent a long pass downfield to Kevin Noschang. Noschang took a shot from 10 yards out, forcing Manny to his left to make a diving save.
Louisville's best chance to score came in the 14th minute of play. Sloan's shot from 20 yards out hit the crossbar and rebounded back into play. Voutier shot the rebound at close range, which was saved by Hoosier goalkeeper Chris Munroe. The Cardinals were then called offside, losing possession of the ball and ending the threat.
Munroe had four saves on the night for the Hoosiers, while Manny tallied five for Louisville.
Indiana goes to 1-2 on the spring campaign. Its next game is against archrival Notre Dame on March 14th at 7:30 p.m. in Indianapolis's Kuntz Stadium. The Fighting Irish defeated the Hoosiers, 5-4, in a thrilling overtime game in the adidas Classic during the 2006 season.
