BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University sophomore Jorge Campillo was named first team All-Big Ten, the league announced on May 1. It was the second first team honor for the Caceres, Spain, native, who was also on the team and was named Freshman of the Year in 2006. He was the youngest player on the squad in 2007, joining four seniors and one junior with the honor.
"It is quite an honor for Jorge to be named to the first team All-Big Ten squad for the second year in a row," IU head coach Mike Mayer said. "The Big Ten is loaded with talent and to be listed among the league's top six players is a heck of an achievement. We are extremely proud of Jorge and everything he has accomplished this season. He is an outstanding student-athlete, and more importantly, an outstanding young man."
Campillo wrapped up the 2007 season with a team-best stroke average of 73.37 over 35 rounds. He had eight top-10 finishes in 12 events, including two victories. The sophomore opened the spring of 2007 by earning medalist honors in his first two starts, tying for the win at the GADO North Texas Classic and outpacing the field at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate three weeks later.
Joining Campillo on the first team are Matt Harmon (Michigan State), a unanimous selection and the Player of the Year, Bronson La'Cassie (Minnesota), Niall Turner (Minnesota), Robert Rohanna (Penn State) and Pariya Junhasavasdikul (Purdue). Junior Santiago Quirarte was the Hoosiers' sportsmanship honoree.
Earlier this season, Campillo also became the Hoosiers' second Palmer Cup selection. Campillo will represent Europe in the 2007 Palmer Cup presented by Monster. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition between American collegiate golfers and their counterparts from Europe will be played on June 7-8, at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
