ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Members of the Indiana women's golf team will be checking in each day from the NCAA Central Regional, held at the University of Michigan Golf Course. Freshman Anita Gahir shared her thoughts on the third day of the trip and the first round of the tournament with IUHOOSIERS.com.
On how she played in the first round: "I was actually just really happy with how I played. I stayed really positive and just had the support of my team all day long, and I think that really helped. I looked over and everybody was cheering and everybody was smiling. We knew we were playing well, it was just a matter of keeping it up. For me, I just was really confident and really focused and it helped. I feel like i came back (from the double bogey) pretty well - I had a couple of holes after that that were a little rough, but I finished strong and finished lucky, which was nice."
On preparing for her first regionals: "What the team did together was really work on a little bit of mental stuff, preparing that this was just another tournament, and it was just another chance to restart the season because the rankings didn't matter. We spent the past week working on short game and little technical things, and I feel like it really worked today. I think we prepared really well."
On her play on the ninth hole today: "Coming into the last hole, my goal was to finish on a good note. A par would have been great. I had an awful tee shot, and not a very good lie. it was just a matter of getting it near the hole and make par, but I was so lucky to have it go in and have everybody cheering. It was a really good feeling."
On being interviewed by GolfWeekTV: "I think it's nice. I feel like the team is being recognized as playing well as a whole. He mentioned that we were ranked 50th in the country, but in speaking with the team, it's just another tournament. It's regionals and it's a big deal to all of us. It's nice to be interviewed by them and hopefully my answers to them were that we're here to play and that's what we want to do."
On the team having targets on their backs heading into the second round: I think just sticking with the same game plan as today, which was to make as many pars as possible, stay within ourselves and support each other. I think that was such a big part today. It's just a matter of if we come up shooting at the beginning or not, we need to stay positive."
