BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional, the Indiana women's golf team was named GolfWeek's Women's Team of the Week on Monday, May 14. The Hoosiers, the 17th seed in the regional, advanced to their first NCAA Finals since 1998 with their placement while also recording a program-best team total of 884 (289-295-300) for the 54-hole event.
Leading the way for the Hoosiers was junior Elaine Harris, who fired a 2-under-par 69 in the final round to wrap up a tie for seventh place with a total of 216 (72-75-69). Recording birdies on four of her final six holes, including both 17 and 18, Harris' 69 was the low round of the day.
Junior Lauren Harling carded a 1-over 72 in the final round to share 21st place at 225 (76-77-72), and she was joined at that position by freshman Anita Gahir, who opened the tournament with a 1-under 70 and followed that with an even-par 70 in the second round before struggling to an 84 in the closing round to wrap up the regional. Also finishing in the top 25 was freshman Kellye Belcher, who shared 24th position at 226 (72-75-79). Fellow freshman Laura Nochta tied for 46th on the weekend with a 54-hole total of 229 (75-74-80).
The top eight teams at each regional advanced to the NCAA Finals, which will be held in Daytona Beach, Fla., at the LPGA International Legends Course, on May 22-25. Joining IU from the Central Regional will be USC, Georgia, TCU, Vanderbilt, Arizona, Tennessee and Big Ten foe Michigan State. Tee times for the 24-team field will begin at 8 a.m. EDT each day.
