BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Woody Sherwood has been named an assistant women's soccer coach at Indiana University, head coach Mick Lyon announced Monday, May 14. Sherwood, who served last season as an assistant at the University of Louisville, has more than 10 years of experience at the college level, particularly in the Indiana area.
"I am proud and happy to welcome Woody Sherwood to the Indiana Athletics family," Lyon said. "For several years I have competed against Woody when he was head coach of Butler University and he always provided competition that was organized, motivated and talented, and now I am glad to have him on the IU sideline. Having been a friend of Woody's for several years, I have seen him develop into a great coach and his experience will be welcomed by the team this fall."
Sherwood helped Louisville to a top-25 ranking throughout the 2006 season and its first berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals went 13-4-3 on the season, allowing just 10 goals on the year. The 13 wins were an all-time high for U of L, and the national ranking was also a first for the squad.
Before joining the Cardinals, Sherwood served as the head coach at Butler for seven seasons, going 63-64-10. Sherwood was named the 2002 Horizon League Coach of the Year. He helped the Bulldogs to one conference co-championship and three runners-up finishes in the league.
Prior to heading up the Butler program, Sherwood served as head coach at Towson State for a pair of seasons, helping the Tigers to a school-record 14 wins and their first-ever national ranking. He also spent three seasons as an assistant at Xavier from 1994-97.
Sherwood also served as a regional staff coach in Region II of the United States Youth Soccer Association from 2003-05 and was a member of the 1999 USYSA Region I staff. Additionally, he spent a pair of seasons at the helm of the Carmel United Soccer Club.
Sherwood has also been active with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and has been on the Great Lakes Regional Ranking Committee since 2003. Additionally, the Rockville, Md., native served as the NSCAA's ranking chair in 2006. He has been a committee member of the NCAA Tournament Regional Selection Committee since 2004.
As a player, Sherwood won four letters from Xavier while playing both at the midfield and on defense. He graduated from the school with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1991 and earned his master's degree from Xavier in sport administration in 1995.
"The IU team had its most successful year last fall with a national ranking of 16," Lyon said, "and I am sure Woody will contribute in significant ways this fall to help us reach our goal of becoming Big Ten champions."
