BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- Sophomore Jorge Campillo will be participating in the 2007 NCAA Central Regional Championship on May 17-19. The Caceres, Spain, native will be playing at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill., as the No. 2 individual seed.
The event consists of 54 holes, with one round of 18 played each day. Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted over the three days. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams were assigned to each regional site. Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals.
Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club, which will play at a par 72 with a yardage of 7,325, is ranked No. 45 according to Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses. It will be the site of the 2009 Solheim Cup, which pits the best female professional golfers from the United State against their counterparts from Europe.
FIFTH STRAIGHT POSTSEASON APPEARANCE
For the fifth straight season, the Indiana University men's golf team will have a presence in postseason play as sophomore Jorge Campillo earned a spot in the NCAA Central Regional to compete as an individual. The Hoosiers had advanced to the NCAA Regional each of the past three seasons. Prior to that, former Hoosier standout and current PGA Tour member Jeff Overton competed as an individual at the Central Regional as a sophomore in 2003.
"This is the fifth year in a row that Indiana University men's golf will have a presence in NCAA postseason play and Jorge will do an outstanding job of representing us at the NCAA Central Regional," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "Jorge has been working extremely hard preparing for this event and I think he is ready to go. This is an extremely talented field with many of the top amateurs in the world but Jorge ranks right up there with the best of them. I think he has a great chance of advancing out of regional competition to the NCAA finals."
BIG TEN HONOREE
Indiana University sophomore Jorge Campillo was named first team All-Big Ten, the league announced on May 1. It was the second first team honor for the Caceres, Spain, native, who was also on the team and was named Freshman of the Year in 2006. He was the youngest player on the squad in 2007, joining four seniors and one junior with the honor.
Campillo wrapped up the 2007 season with a team-best stroke average of 73.37 over 35 rounds. He had eight top-10 finishes in 12 events, including two victories. The sophomore opened the spring of 2007 by earning medalist honors in his first two starts, tying for the win at the GADO North Texas Classic and outpacing the field at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate three weeks later.
Joining Campillo on the first team were Matt Harmon (Michigan State), a unanimous selection and the Player of the Year, Bronson La'-Cassie (Minnesota), Niall Turner (Minnesota), Robert Rohanna (Penn State) and Pariya Junhasavasdikul (Purdue). Junior Santiago Quirarte was the Hoosiers' sportsmanship honoree.
EURO PRIDE
Sophomore Jorge Campillo was one of eight golfers selected to represent Europe in the 2007 Palmer Cup presented by Monster. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition between American collegiate golfers and their counterparts from Europe will be played on June 7-8, at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
Campillo will be joined on the team by Jonas Blixt of Florida State (Sweden), Rhys Davies (Wales) and Gareth Shaw (Northern Ireland), who play for East Tennessee State, Texas Tech's Oscar Floren (Sweden), Georgia State's Mark Haastrup (Denmark), Arizona's Pedro Oriol (Spain) and Stirling's Gordon Yates (Scotland). The group will be coached by Chris van der Velde of the Netherlands. The United States leads the alltime series 5-4-1, but Europe has captured three of the last four titles. He is the second Palmer Cup participant to come from the Indiana lineup, as former Hoosier and current PGA Tour player Jeff Overton represented the United States at the 2005 competition. Campillo, a member of the Spanish National Federation team, has been selected to the Spanish National Team 17 times. Most recently, he represented his country at the European Under-21 Team Championships in the summer of 2006. Campillo captured all of his matches throughout the championships to lead the Spanish National Team to victory.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK X TWO
Indiana University sophomore Jorge Campillo was named the Co-Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced on Thursday, March 22. It marked his the second weekly honor of the season and the fifth of his career. Campillo captured the individual title at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate with a 3-under-par total of 213 (73-67-73) on March 18-20. He also led the Hoosiers to a first-place finish at the event with a team total of 880 (297-293-290). It was the second consecutive title for both the Hoosiers and Campillo, who each shared first place at the GADO North Texas Classic to open the spring season on Feb. 18-19. The 67 turned in by the Caceres, Spain, native in the second round tied his career low, which he set in the third round of the NCAA East Regional in 2006.
INVITE ONLY
Indiana University sophomores Seth Brandon and Jorge Campillo were invited to participate in the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational on Feb. 2-4, at the Frederica Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga. The Jones Cup Invitational, a 54-hole stroke play event, is contested biennially among the best amateur players from around the world. First contested in 2001, the Jones Cup Committee extended invitations to 99 players for the 2007 competition based on a variety of criteria, such as tournament finishes and amateur rankings.
Campillo finished in a tie for 62nd place at the event with a three-day total of 226 (70-81-75), while Brandon was one stroke behind him, wrapping up the event in a tie for 69th at 227 (76-76-75).
AN INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
Beginning with David Butwell (Southampton, England) in 2003, Indiana has welcomed an influx of international talent to Bloomington. Santiago Quirarte (Queretaro, Mexico) joined the Hoosiers two years ago, and Spaniards Jorge Campillo (Caceres) and Eric Serch (Barcelona) came aboard last season.
