BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - J.D. Campbell has been named Indiana University's Director of Media Relations, the Department of Athletics announced Wednesday. Campbell, who begins June 4, will serve as the day-to-day media contact for the men's basketball program. He also will direct a staff which is responsible for managing the day-to-day communication efforts for the Hoosiers' 24 intercollegiate programs.
"I'm grateful to everyone who was part of the selection process to have the opportunity to become a member of the Indiana University family," Campbell said. "This is one of those rare special places that combines a nationally prominent athletic program, an outstanding campus environment and a wonderful community to live in. I am humbled by my selection and anxious to get started."
Campbell, 43, is entering his 21st year in the collegiate sports information profession. He comes to Bloomington after spending the last seven years at Bowling Green State University, where he served as Assistant Athletics Director for Communications.
At BGSU, he directed the publicity efforts for the Falcons' 18-sport intercollegiate athletic program. He was responsible for overseeing the department's website, BGSUFalcons.com, and was the day-to-day media contact for football and men's basketball. In addition, he also was the University's licensing administrator.
A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Campbell received his bachelor's degree in communications from Kansas Newman in 1986, and his master's degree in sports administration from Xavier in 1994. He was an All-American baseball player at Newman in 1985 and also played two seasons of college baseball at Taft (Calif.) College.
Campbell came to BGSU from Emporia State University, where he was Director of University Public Affairs and Marketing (2000) for one year and SID for six years (1993-99). Campbell began his professional career as the SID at Johnson County Community College from 1986-89 and was sports information and promotions coordinator at Northern Kentucky University from 1989-93. He has been honored 16 times by the College Sports Information Directors of America for publications excellence, including four "Best in the Nation" citations.
Campbell and his wife, Kerri, are the parents of two boys, Jonathan (14) and Christopher (11).
