DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Members of the Indiana women's golf team will be checking in each day from the NCAA Championship, held at the LPGA International Legends Course. Freshman Laura Nochta shared her thoughts on the first few days of the trip with IUHOOSIERS.com.
"On Saturday (May 19), we got in, had a nice dinner, and then the girls walked on the beach and took pictures. We went down to the pier and did some shopping and talked about everything but golf. During the practice rounds on Sunday (May 20) and Monday (May 21), we worked a lot on strategy, our positioning off of the tee and on our approach shots. On the greens, we focused on angles and the speed on our putts. On Monday, we realized that a bunch of teams weren't finishing their practice rounds, but we felt that it was really important to focus on the angles and positioning all the time. We spent a lot of time putting and chipping on Monday.
Sunday night was the banquet at Daytona Motor Speedway. We had a police escort! There was a huge line of vehicles being led by motorcycles with the lights on, and there were police blocking off the road, too. It was really cool. We went to victory lane once we got there, where they had a car on so that you could see how loud it was. The platform where the drivers get their trophies was set up, so we went up there and took some photos. It was really exciting, especially for Kellye (Belcher) and Lauren (Harling), who are from the South and are huge NASCAR fans.
I'm looking forward to enjoying the experience of the NCAA Championships. We are playing with some of the best players and teams in the country, and the fact that we get to represent IU as one of those great teams is an amazing honor."
