DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Indiana women's golf team finished with a team total of 1271 (320-318-323-310) at the NCAA Championships on Friday, May 25. The Hoosiers, making their first NCAA Championship appearance since 1998, wrapped up the tournament in 24th place.
"Obviously we are disappointed with our finish in the field," head coach Clint Wallman said. "However, we took away a lot of things to work on next year. The girls played very hard and tried to grind it out. I saw a lot of good things and am really excited for next year."
Leading the way for the Hoosiers was freshman Anita Gahir, who wrapped up the tournament with a total of 313 (81-79-78-75), good for a tie for 81st. After opening with pars on her first five holes on the back nine, her first of the day, Gahir carded her lone bogey of the nine on the par-3 15th hole. Three more pars closed out the back nine for a 1-over 37, and she had two more bogies to go along with seven pars on the front nine for a 38 and her 3-over-par total of 75. That total tied her with classmate Kellye Belcher for the Hoosiers' lowest round of the tournament.
Belcher followed Gahir at the NCAA Championships, firing a 78 on Friday to wrap up the week with a total of 321 (84-75-84-78) and in a tie for 101st place. After a 4-over 40 on the back nine to open the day, Belcher recorded five pars and two bogies to go along with one birdie and a 2-over 38 on the front nine to close out the day.
One stroke behind her was junior Lauren Harling, who wrapped up the tournament with a total of 322 (80-85-80-77). She turned in nines of 38 and 39 for her 77 on Friday to finish tied for 104th.
Junior Elaine Harris and freshman Laura Nochta wrapped up the IU lineup with totals of 326 for the week. Harris, who carded rounds of 80-79-87-80 at the Championship, closed out her opening nine on Friday with five pars before her first birdie of the week on the par-5 second hole. Nochta, who had rounds of 79-85-81-81 throughout the week, wrapped up Friday with a 40 on the back nine and a 41 on the front. The two shared 110th place.
Duke won its third consecutive national championship with a total of 1170 (300-287-293-290). Big Ten rival Purdue finished second at 1185 (303-294-291-297), while UCLA was third at 1186 (303-291-299-293). Stacey Lewis of Arkansas captured the individual title with a 6-under-par total of 282 (71-71-74-66), while Christel Boeljon of Purdue (72-69-69-76) and Paola Moreno of USC (73-72-70-71) shared second place with totals of 286.
