BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the fifth straight season, the Indiana University men's golf team will have a presence in postseason play as sophomore Jorge Campillo earned a spot in the NCAA Central Regional to compete as an individual. Campillo, a first team All-Big Ten honoree earlier in the month, is the second-seeded individual at the event, which will be held at the Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course in Sugar Grove, Ill., on May 17-19.
"Jorge had an outstanding year and this honor is very well deserved," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "While we are disappointed that we did not advance as a team, we know that Jorge can still win the NCAA Championship as an individual for Indiana University. He will represent Indiana well in the regional and at the NCAA Championship."
Campillo wrapped up the 2007 season with a team-best stroke average of 73.37 over 35 rounds. He had eight top-10 finishes in 12 events, including two victories. The sophomore opened the spring of 2007 by earning medalist honors in his first two starts, tying for the win at the GADO North Texas Classic and outpacing the field at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate three weeks later.
The Hoosiers had advanced to the NCAA Regional each of the past three seasons. Prior to that, former Hoosier standout and current PGA Tour member Jeff Overton competed as an individual at the Central Regional as a sophomore in 2003.
"This is the fifth year in a row that Indiana has had a presence in the postseason," Mayer said. "We are very proud of that accomplishment, and we know that the team will be back next year. The team is very young, with four sophomores, a freshman and a junior making up the top six players this year, and they will all be returning. With them and the recruiting class that is coming in, the team will be better, stronger and more competitive next year and will be back in the NCAAs as a team."
