With the induction of six former Hoosiers into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame on June 23, IUHOOSIERS.com will profile the inductees over the next two weeks. The profile for Friday, June 15, is of all-time great Doug Crusan.
One of four Indiana University football All-America selections in 1967, Doug Crusan became the first defensive lineman in IU history to be so recognized when he earned second team honors. That same year he helped lead the Hoosiers to the Big Ten championship and a berth in the Rose Bowl.
A product of Monessen, Pa., Crusan began his career playing on the offensive side of the ball, but was switched to defense prior to his senior season. During his only season playing on defense, the Hoosier captain totaled 76 tackles, including three tackles for loss, two passes broken up, and three fumble recoveries.
Following his final campaign, Crusan was selected to play in both the Senior Bowl and the All-American Bowl. He followed that up by becoming the second of two first-round draft selections by the Miami Dolphins in 1968, along with their top pick, Larry Csonka. Crusan played offensive tackle for the Dolphins from 1968-74 and was a member of Miami's Super Bowl VII and VIII championship teams. In 1972, he played for the only undefeated team in NFL history.
