BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana water polo team was recognized for its academics on Tuesday, June 5, as the Hoosiers were honored by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches for being one of 18 teams nationally to post a grade point average of 3.00. Senior Kristin Zernicke led six Hoosier individuals who were recognized for posting GPAs of 3.20 or higher.
"We are very proud of the academic success of both Kristin Zernicke and our program as a whole," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "Kristin has been an outstanding leader both in the pool and out, and has been a stellar role model for our team. This is a well deserved honor for her."
The ACWPC All-Academic Team for individual athlete honors is divided into three different categories. The three levels are Excellent (3.2-3.4 GPA), Superior (3.41-3.7) and Outstanding (3.71-4.0). The qualification for CWPA All-Academic standing is that a player must be a starter or major contributor, while also maintaining a 3.2 or higher GPA. Over the last six years, the Hoosiers have had a total of 33 Academic All-Americans.
A year after becoming the first Hoosier to earn three straight Outstanding honors, Zernicke made it a perfect four times in four years. Zernicke had the ninth-highest GPA in the nation among college water polo players.
A pair of Hoosiers earned Superior laurels, with junior Brittany Estrada and freshman Nicole Sands earning the distinction. This marks the second consecutive season that Estrada has earned Superior mention from the organization.
Senior Emily Schmitt earned her fourth Excellent citation from the organization, as she was awarded the distinction in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 campaigns. Senior Kara Woolley found herself in the category for the second time, as did junior Jackie Pyrz.
