BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Rising sophomore Josh Phegley of the Indiana baseball team has been named the starting catcher for the Western Division in the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game, the league announced on Saturday. Phegley is currently hitting .295 for the Wareham Gatemen.
In his first season in the top summer collegiate league, Phegley has emerged as one of the top backstops in the league, as he is second on his team in batting average and doubles (five) and is third on the squad in slugging percentage (.377). Perhaps more impressive has been the Terre Haute, Ind., native's defense, where he has thrown out 8-of-21 runners on the basepaths, picked off another, made one error and allowed three passed balls, for a .994 fielding percentage.
Phegley was one of two Big Ten players to be selected as starters in the all-star game. Iowa second baseman Kevin Hoef, playing with the Bourne Braves, will also start for the West squad. Purdue pitcher Josh Lindblom (Cotuit) is a reserve for the West, while Michigan State outfielder Kyle Day (Harwich) is a reserve for the East.
Recently, Phegley was one of two Gatemen invited to Boston's Fenway Park for an invitation-only workout at the historic field. Phegley and teammate Beamer Weems took batting practice and fielded balls in the outfield in the workout, which showcased some of the league's top talent for members of the Red Sox organization.
Phegley is not the only Hoosier who is posting a standout summer, as Jarrett Casey has pitched very well for the Union City Greyhounds, posting a 1.71 ERA and a .134 batting average against in 31 2/3 innings. Casey has gone 2-1 with 49 strikeouts. Additionally, Evan Crawford has hit .316 in 16 games with the Delaware Cows of the Great Lakes Collegiate Summer League.
