BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Six members of the Indiana women's soccer team have taken their club teams to the United States Youth Soccer Association Championships, held this week in Frisco, Texas.
Five players - Kristin Arnold, Nikki Bonacorsi, Jessica Boots, Christie Kotynski and Natalie O'Bryan - have brought the Carmel United Cyclone Under-19 squad to the championships, while Taylor Fallon's Slammer FC Under-18 squad is also at the championships.
Carmel United advanced to nationals by emerging as the champions at the Region 2 Championships at the end of June. Carmel won Pool C by tying the KC Metro Dynamos on June 23 in its first match, then dropped Cincinnati United Premier 4-1 and Louisville SA 7-0. Carmel topped Illinois' Eclipse Select Black in the semifinals and Wisconsin's FC Milwaukee in the finals to win the region and move on to nationals.
Carmel begins its quest for a national title with Wednesday's game against 87 CASL Spartan Elite, the region 3 champions, and will follow with games Thursday and Friday. The Cyclones face Region 4 champ Sereno 88 White on Thursday and finish with Region 1 winner PWSI Cardinals in the final day of round-robin action. The Under-19 Championship will take place on Sunday, July 29, at 7:30 a.m.
Fallon and her Slammers teammates began their quest for an Under-18 championship with a 1-0 win Wednesday morning over Arsenal World Class. The Region 4 champion, Slammers FC will have to face Region 2's Bloomfield Force and Region 1's Solar 89 Girls on Thursday and Friday for a spot in the title match. The finals are slated for Saturday, July 28, at 8 a.m.
The USYSA Championships are held annually at Pizza Hut Park, the home of Major League Soccer's FC Dallas.
